Ducal Palace - Palazzo DucaleMore info on the Ducal Palace in GenoaThe Ducal Palace of Genoa is a great and historical building in the center of Genoa. The side on Piazza De Ferrari is no longer in the original conditions that it once was, but people who visit it can see the original side on Piazza Matteotti and an aspect of the medieval building in the south garden. It was built in one of the best times of the Genovese Republic after the victory at the battle of Meloria aganist Pisa and the victory at the battle of Curzola against Venice. The location between San Lorenzo ad San Matteo was chosen by the capiani del popolo (people's leader) Oberto Spinola and Corrado Doria in the 1291. The construction of the Palace started 3 years later. The name "Palazzo Ducale" is gaven tu de Palace in the 1339 when it became the palace of the power of the city, the office and house of the Doge (the President of the Genovese Republic). The Torre del Popolo (People's tower), knew also as Torre Grimaldina, that even today is high on the old part of the city, was started in the 1539. Andrea Ceresola (the Vannone) received in the 1591 the task to modernize the palace, and made largest and staircase you can see in the covered hall of the building. The chapel of the palace was decorated in XVII century by Giovanni Battista Carlone. Even recently the Ducal Palace is entered again in the history: In 1992, it was opened again after a complete renovation after damages that accumulated in World War II: with 38000 sq.m and 300.000 cubic meters, was the largest restoration project undertaken in Europe.
