Mad Men's January Jones the New Face of Versace
When WWD broke the news that Mad Men's January Jones (Betty Draper to you) was going to be the face of Versace's Spring 2011 ad campaign it seemed a long time coming. Since meeting Donatella Versace at an Elle photoshoot in 2009 the beautiful blonde actress has continuously showed her love for the brand. Not only has Jones showed up at red carpet events in Versace--who can forget that scaled cobalt blue confection, complete with cones, from the 2010 Emmys?--but she has also been spotted in the front row at the Italian fashion house's shows and attended dinners hosted by Donatella. Most recently Jones appeared at the party celebrating the Central Saint Martins 20:20 Fashion Fund in London wearing a knee-length black Versace dress with side and back cut-outs.
Jones' cool beauty seems a perfect compliment to Versace's sexy and glamorous designs. Beyond that, the actress has the courage to sport some of Donatella's more "out there" creations, sometimes with mixed results. And while the House of Versace will only confirm that the Spring 2011 campaign will "feature" Jones it seems clear that the partnership between designer and actress is flourishing.
Some of January's Memorable Versaces
Aside from the iconic blue Emmy dress Jones has sported quite a few other memorable Versace dresses in recent years. The first that springs to mind is the glamorous red fringed halter dress that January wore to the Versace Spring/Summer 2011 runway show in Milan where the actress sat next to shoe designer Brian Atwood. Jones accessorized her Lady in Red look with a poufed chignon, bright red lips, white sandals and a silver clutch.
At the 2009 Emmys the Mad Men star also chose Versace, this time a futuristic white strapless number that she complimented with a simple upswept hairdo and minimal make-up. The gown featured a dramatic cinched-in waist, high front slit and silver-accented bodice with cut outs and what looked liked nailhead detailing.
January also chose another blue number at the 2009 Golden Globes, this time a lighter shade that fully complimented her cool coloring. The straight-from-the-runway, one-shouldered gown featured zippered accents, expert pleating and a dramatic slit. Jones did do away with the slim belt that the dress was shown with on the runway. It seems likely that with a new awards season almost upon us we can expect to see more of January wearing Versace.
The Versace Spring 2011 ad campaign is set to be shot by celebrated photographer Mario Testino who seems to have a knack for bringing out the beautiful and the glamorous in his subjects, not that Ms. Jones needs much help in that department. We can't wait to see what sure-to-be-sultry shots will result from this collaboration.
