Milan Fashion Week Menswear Spring 2011 - Part 3
80s Sex Appeal at DSquared
Dean and Dan Caten have made a career on sportswear with sex appeal and collections centered around some grand themes. One need look no further than their recent fall collection for women, which was inspired by the human body (hello spine heels!) and the lab. For this reason the rather classic, if somewhat Miami Vice-ish, looks of DSquared's Spring/Summer 2011 menswear collection was something of a departure for the brothers. Inspired by American Gigolo the Catens churned out some perfectly tailored, preppy and, yes, pink looks that were both sensual and all American.
John Varvatos' Vintage Country Rocker
John Varvatos was celebrating quite the milestone during Milan fashion week--the 10th anniversary of his eponymous label. The momentous collection was held in a Milan church where Varvatos gathered family and friends, including iconic rockstars like Robert Plant and Iggy Pop. Fittingly with such luminaries in the audience, the influence of rock 'n roll on the collection was at once obvious and understated. Varvatos sent out several of his signature three-piece looks as well as items that looked old, worn and classic. While the designer produced bad boy leather biker jackets and skinny pants he also sent very country knit cardigans and plaid coats down the runway, a unique spin on the rocker-as-dandy look.
A Layered Look at Marni
For Marni's Consuelo Castiglioni this spring is all about layers. Double and triple layers at that. Raincoats over suits, a cropped sweater over a button-down, untucked shirttails trailing out from under a V-neck. Castiglioni also produced some great sportswear, easy separates and stylish outwear like a red-and-blue windbreaker that will make weekend dressing easy.
And More Layers at Missoni
Angela Missoni, too, seemed taken with layers and proportions this season. Classic Missoni knits were paired with button downs, cargo shorts and bright shoes and socks. We saw stripes and zigzags, patchwork and plaid for a decidedly eclectic, artisanal and ethnic melting pot of unique style.
Moschino's Pop, Rock and Classic Season
Bill Shapiro incorporated pop (art), rock and classic into his lively designs for Moschino Spring/Summer 2011. The label's trademark fun and camp vibe were in evidence, as were oft used symbols like peace signs (think white and large on a black blazer). Some of the pieces were perhaps too bright and brash for the average person to wear, but several of the items--when isolated--are definitely the work of quite an accomplished designer.
