Fashion Week: Milan, September 2009 III
Continuing from the second part on Milan Fashion Week Sep 2009, Lifeinitaly takes a look at a few more Italian designers from the ramps of Milan.
Gucci at Milan Fashion Week September 2009
Frida Giannini has always been criticised for being more commercial than creative. as if in defiance, this Spring she has trotted out a collection that would be an absolute hit with celebrities.
Tight is an understatement for this line done in stretch fabric. The wearer has to have to have an absolutely streamlined figure to carry off the dresses, skirts, and trousers she suggests for Gucci Spring 2010. The cut-outs in the dresses give them extra oomph: the inspiration seems to be swimwear.
The colors are white, grey in various shades, and browns, with a few vibrant prints that included orange and pink, thrown in for a line of short, tight dresses.
A dash of color in an otherwise sedate color palette, they throw the rest of the collection in relief. A Gucci Spring Collection meant exclusively for thin, gorgeous women, this is designing for the body-conscious at its most cavalier. Giannini is at her unapologetic best for Gucci this Spring.
Marni at Milan Fashion Week September 2009
At a Marni Spring show, you expect summery prints, muted colours, a whole bunch of mixed silhouettes. Designer Consuelo Castiglioni delivers that and more this year in his vision of a Marni Spring. The dull pinks, soft beiges, lemons, peaches and rusty browns come together with polka dot prints and bright splashes of colour, in order to create that curious mix that is Marni.
The Marni look is slightly unkempt, not easily defined. It is neither gypsy chic, nor urban girl about town, nor a 60's flower girl, but a pleasant combination of all three. Castiglioni got it right once again with his loose long tops, sequinned chiffon, bright, hazy flower prints and numerous leggings and bandanas. The Marni Spring 2010 is bright, comfortable, and desirable in an unusual sort of way.
Missoni at Milan Fashion Week September 2009
Angela Missoni took her show outdoors for this spring, on the grounds of the Università degli Studi di Milano, which highlighted the simple beauty of her collection.
The silouhette remained lean throughout, the idea was to showcase the trademark knits the brand is famous for, by draping and wrapping them over a fitted form.
The basic form consisted of slim tube dresses, mostly below the knee, and short tops teamed with sarong skirts. Missoni stuck to the almost monochrome palette of light naturals along with a few teals and pinks towards the end. Not much by the way of construction either, but this only highlighted the beauty of the knits and embellishments.
The knits appeared in the form of cardigans, ultra-light duster coats, and bandeau tops and tunics. The fine quality and the beauty of the knits took the breath away, which is what Missoni had intended all along. With this Spring collection, Missoni has reached new heights of delicate designing and innovation as a maker of exquisite knitwear.
