For many,  shopping is an integral part of a vacation and there aren't many places where you'll find better shopping than in Italy. Whether you're looking for clothing or souvenirs, shopping in Italy requires a certain set of phrases, learn these and your shopping trips will be a breeze! Here are some parts of a common conversation that occurs in a dress shop to help:

  • come salutare in modo adeguato, corretto = appropriate greetings

  • iniziare una conversazione = initiating the conversation

  • dettagli riguardanti la tua taglia = details about your size

  • dettagli riguardanti il colore = details about color

  • dettagli riguardanti il prezzo = details about price

  • dettagli riguardo lo stile = details about style

  • esprimere opinioni riguardanti colore, taglia, prezzo e stile = expressing opinions about color, size, price and style

  • pagamento degli articoli = paying for items

  • un appropriata conclusione della conversazione = an appropriate conclusion to the conversation

Dialogue:

Commessa/Shop Assistant: Buongiorno signora, come posso aiutarla? = Good morning madam, how can I help you?

Cliente/Client: Buon giorno vorrei un paio di jeans blu scuro = I would like a pair of dark jeans

Com = Che taglia porta? = What's your size?

Cl: La 42 o la 44, dipende dal modello = My size is 42 or 44, depending on the style

Com: Provi questi, sono taglia 42 ma calzano molto bene = Try these on, they're size 42, but they fit very well

Le piacciono? = Do you like them?

Cl : Si, ma mi stanno bene? = Yes, do they look good on me?

Com: Sta bene con quel jeans = These jeans suit you

Oppure, se è un vestito = Or maybe, if it is a dress.

Questo vestito è così carino e mi sta meglio di quello che potevo pensare = This dress is so cute. It is pretty comfortable and it fits better than I could have imagined.

Cl: Molto bene, li prendo = They fit perfectly, I'll get them

Com: Desidera altro? =  Anything else?

Cl: Si, vorrei pure una cintura = Yes, I would like a belt as well

Com: Ecco ne abbiamo di tutti i tipi: la preferisce di plastica o di cuoio? E di che colore? = Here, we have all types: do you prefer plastic or leather? And what colour?

Cl: La preferisco di cuoio marrone, mi dia quella. Quanto costa? = I do prefer leather, I'll take that one. How much does it cost?

Com: 50E. Paga in contanti o con la carta di credito? = 50Euro, are you paying cash or with your credit card?

Cl: con la carta, ecco. =By card, here it is.

Com: Bene, firmi qui....grazie ed arrivederci = Wonderful, sign here, thank you

Cll: arrivederci! = goodbye!

 

Helpful Phrases:

 

Che taglia ha ? = What size are you?

Prendo la taglia... = I take a size...

Avete la taglia 44 di questo? = Do you have this in a size 44?

Dov'è il camerino? = Where is the fitting room?

Lo prendo! = I'll take it!

Avete questa maglia di una misura più piccola/più grande?= Do you have this sweater in a smaller/bigger size?

E' troppo piccolo/grande = It's too small/big

Sono lavabili? = Are these machine washable?

Le sta bene = It suits you

Questa è l'ultima camicia rimasta = This is the last remaining shirt

Questi sono gli ultimi pantaloni eleganti che abbiamo = These are the last formal trousers we have

Queste sono le ultime scarpe numero 39 rimaste = These are the last size 39 shoes

Questo e' l-ultimo paio di  calze di lana rimaste = This is the last remaining pair of woolen socks

Questa è l'ultima borsa sportiva rimasta = This is the last sports bag left

Un cappotto elegante da uomo, di lana, con il doppio petto, grigio scuro = A formal wool coat for men, double-breasted in dark gray.

Un maglione da uomo, di lana a tinta unita, con il collo alto e le trecce sul davanti = A wool sweater for men, in a plain color, with high neck and cable pattern on the front.

Un pigiama maschile, di cotone a tinta unita, con una sottile linea sui bordi, con le maniche ed i pantaloni lunghi ed il taschino sulla giacca = A pair of men's  cotton pajamas in a plain color,  with a thin, white edging, sleeves, long pants and a pocket on the jacket.

Una canottiera di cotone, da donna, a fiori, con la scollatura tonda = A cotton undershirt, flowered, with a round neckline

Un paio di pantaloni blu a zampa d'elefante, alla cavalerizza, alla pescatora, alla zuava = A pair of  blue bell-bottom trousers, breeches, pedal pushers, knickerbockers.
