Chi, Che, Quale, Quanto

In Italian, as in English, we use an interrogative pronoun to introduce a question. Examples of these are:

About person: CHI?  =  Who? (invariable, subject and complement)

About things: CHE?  = What? (invariable, subject and complement that corresponds to "che cosa?") Note: Often in spoken Italian we only use "cosa" as in "Cosa stai facendo?" or "What are you doing?" rather than "Che cosa stai facendo?"

About quality: QUALE-I? = Which? (For questions relating to quality, identity or to someone or something.)

About quantity: QUANTO-A-E-I? = How much? / How many?

Examples

We use the interrogative pronouns described above at the beginning of sentences that end with a question mark. For example:

Quanto costa...? = How much is it? / How much does it cost?

About  time: Da quanto  tempo...? = How long...?

About distance : Quanto è distante....=  How far is...?

Direct Question                                          Indirect Question

Chi sei?                                                       Dimmi chi sei.

Che fai?                                                       Spiegami che fai.

Queste stoffe mi piacciono: quale scegliere?   Non so quale scegliere.

Avevi molti soldi: quanti ne hai spesi?             Ti domando quanti ne hai spesi.

Exclamatory Sentences & Interrogative Pronouns

When used in the following ways these interrogative pronouns form exclamatory sentences:

Chi si vede! = Look whose here!

Quanti non sanno! = How much they don't know!

Che mi accadde! = Look what happens to me!

CHI generically can indicate a person with no distinction about whether they are male or female and can also be used in the plural context. ie:

Chi bussa?  = Who is knocking?

Con chi esci? = Who are you going out with?

Chi siete? = Who are you? (plural)

Chi sono quegli uomini? = Who are those men? (plural)

CHE has an indefinite meaning about "cosa":

Che (= che cosa) vedo? = What am I seeing?Di che (= di che cosa) parli? = Who (what) are you talking about?

QUALE e QUANTO take the place of  the noun that indicates: 1. Quality  and 2. Quantity. ie:

Eccoti dei giornali: quale scegli? Quanti ne vuoi? = Here are the newspapers: Which do you want? How many?

Remember that it is not correct to use CHE in this way: "Che bello!" or "Che bravo" - WRONG!

Instead you should say: "Com'è bello!" or "Com'è bravo!' - CORRECT!
