How to express opinion

How to express opinion, agreement, disagreement, advice and suggestions in Italian

 

Expressing an opinion, agreeing or not with somebody, giving or asking for advice are all common, everyday actions, which are described in Italian, as in every language, by a special vocabulary. Here are some of the more common.

These espressions will help you to enrich your vocabulary and the more you practice them, the better you master them.

Ascolta! = Listen! (Imperativo)

Capisco….= I understand/ I know

Che cosa vuoi dire? = what do you mean?

Bene, vediamo….= Well, let me see….

Capisci quello che intendo dire? = Do you see what I mean?

Va bene = All right

E’ abbastanza chiaro? = Is that clear enough?

Chiedere un’opinione = Asking for opinion

Qual’è la tua opinione riguardo il mio articolo? = What’s your opinion of my article?/ what do you think about my article

Cosa pensi riguardo la costruzione di uno spazio verde per i bambini? = How do you feel about building a green space for children?

Cosa ne pensi del matrimonio? = How do you feel about marriage?

Qual’è il tuo atteggiamento riguardo l’aborto? =What’s your position on abortion?

Vorresti prendere in considerazione di mandare tua figlia all’estero? = Would you consider sending your daughter abroad?

Cosa pensi del cibo italiano? = What do you think of Italian food?

Dare la tua opinione = Giving your opinion

Secondo me, i giovani oggigiorno hanno troppa libertà = In my opinion teenagers have far too much freedom these days.

A mio parere, i soldi del governo non dovrebbero essere usati per sostenere i giornali = In my view government money shouldn’t be used to support the newspapers.

Secondo il mio giudizio…..= In my reckoning…., …in my opinion, I think that…

Io fermamente credo…. = I strongly believe

Io penso assolutamente che……= I definitely think ….

Secondo il mio modesto parere = In my humble opinion…..

Mi sembra che l’Italia si sia stancata della costante presenza di immigrati = It seems to me that Italy has become tired of the constant presence of immigrants.

Mi sembrerebbe che….= It would seem to me that….

Esprimere la probabilità = Expressing probability

Credo che Carlo voglia andare al campeggio quest’anno, ma non sono sicura = I think Carlo wants go to camping this year, but I’m not sure.

Io posso supporre con ragione che la punizione ( il castigo) è corretta = I can reasonably suppose that punishment is correct.

Io suppongo che tu lo sappia = I suppose (that) you know

Credo ci siano 30 bambini nella classe = I guess that there are 30 pupils in the class.

Probabilmente il prossimo anno andrò in Italia = I will probably go to Italy next year.

Expressing agreement / disagreement

Io sono d’accordo = I agree with you

Sono completamente d’accordo = I completely agree

Penso che questa idea è perfetta = I think this idea is perfect

Il mio punto di vista  è positivo = My view on this issue is positive

Sono completamente in disaccordo = I disagree entirely

Temo di non poter essere d’accordo =I’m afraid I can’t agree

Non sono sicura che tu abbia ragione =I’m not sure you are right

Penso che questa idea sia impossibile = I think this idea is impossible

Clarification

Puoi essere più chiaro? = Can you be more specific?

Che cosa intendi? = What do you mean?

Perchè dici cio’? = Why do you say that?

Cosa stai cercando di dire? = What are you trying to say?

Suggestion

Ti consiglio di vendere la tua attività = I would advise to sell the business

Dove ci suggerisci di andare? = Where do you suggest we go?

Cosa mi consigli di mangiare? = What do you suggest to eat?

Mi piacerebbe che tu mi suggerissi alcuni ristoranti = I would love it if you could suggest some restaurants

Propongo un brindisi! = I propose a toast!

Ti consiglio di vestirti formalmente = I advice you to dress formally

Dovresti considerare di prendere le chiavi prima di uscire = You should consider taking the keys before you leave.

Che ne pensi di andare al cinema domani? = What about going to the cinema tomorrow?

Che ne dici di fare jogging? = How about jogging?

Ti va di andare al cinema? = Do you fancy going to the cinema?

Help

Posso aiutarti? = Can I help you?

Potresti portare questa lettera per me? = Could you please carry this letter for me?

Potresti darmi una mano con il compito? = Could you give me a hand with my homework?

Ti dispiacerebbe chiudere la finestra? = Would you mind shutting the window?

Ho bisogno del tuo aiuto per cucinare questa minestra = I need your help to cook this soup.

Se hai bisogno di qualunque cosa, chiedi pure = If you need anything, feel free to ask me.

Posso chiederti un favore? = Can I ask a favour?
