Costiera Amalfitana, or the famous Amalfi coast is an area in Italy which is blessed with diversity and great natural beauty. The locations along the coast have been settled since the early Middle Ages. The landscape along the coast comprises of the mountains and sea with several coves and creeks which can only be reached by sea. There are several natural areas which have remained completely untouched by tourism or by any human influence. The highest mountain along the coast is Monte San Angelo a Torre Pizzi which stands at an altitude of 1425 meters. 

The rural areas on the coast have great versatility and have adapted the land for their use in a very natural way like the orchards, the upland pastures and the terraced vineyards. The coast is mainly known for its various cultivations on the terraced land where citrus fruits are grown. The most important product produced in the region is lemon. Lemons that are grown here are sweet and they can be eaten as desserts even without sugar. Cuisine which is typical to the coast makes abundant use of these lemons in cakes as well as in the famous liqueur "limoncello" which is now famous all over the world.

The coast is made up of thirteen towns that spread from Gulf of Salerno to Naples. There are various coves, cliffs and creeks along the way and the different landscape enchants anyone who visits the area. Every town along the coast has a treasure of culture, art and architecture. Rocky Peninsula

The main town along the coast is Amalfi which is now an internationally renowned tourist spot because of its natural beauty. The town is also well known for its monuments and its history. Amalfi is situated among the Lattari Mountains and the sea and the Amalfi coast has been named after the town. The town is characterized by narrow winding streets, charming staircases and white houses perched on the rocks which makes it look more Greek than Italian. 

The port of Amalfi has been an important trade center since ancient times. The sailors from the town how to navigate using compasses and modern equipment since centuries because of which it was considered to be one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. The port now allows visitors to travel to the neighboring regions and the beaches on the coast like the Santa Croce beach. There are many important monuments and architectural wonders in Amalfi, the most important being the Cathedral of Amalfi which is dedicated to Saint Andrew. The staircase of the cathedral is especially noteworthy.

Several excursions and boats leave for Sorrent and Capri from the port of Amalfi. Every year in June the traditional boat race known are "Regata Storica delle Repubbliche Marinare" takes place at the port in which the participants are dressed in medieval costumes. In the summer months several important festivals and events take place in Amalfi including the Lemon festival where culinary enthusiasts from across the world travel to participate in. Amalfi is especially known for its ancient technique of making paper which dates back to the 18th century. Paper is still made using the same ancient technique. The paper museum, Museo della Carta showcases the history and the technique of paper making in Amalfi.

Ravello has been famous all across Italy and the world for its famous International music festival, Internazionale di Musica where music lovers from all over the world travel to the town to participate in the festival. The town is very chic and quiet and has a wonderful landscape and beautiful views of the sea. Ravello had been a prosperous trading center since the 11th and the 12th centuries. the town is characterized by its beautiful belvederes among which is the Princess of Piedmont which provides excellent views of the coast. 

The town is located in the valley between the Reginna and the Dragone streams along the Lattari Mountains. The silent and the peaceful atmosphere of the town has been enchanting people since centuries. Ravello is mainly famous for its exquisite villas. Various famous artists like Escher, Vedova, Miro and Ruskin had produced works which had been inspired by the landscapes of the town.

Among the various important monuments of the town, the Cathedral of Ravello is the most important. The cathedral had been built in the 12th century and is known for its beautiful architecture. Several villas in Ravello are noted for their architecture and their artistic value like the Villa Rufolo which was built in the 11th century and has beautiful terraces. Villa Cimbrone is also noteworthy for its beautiful belvedere. Ravello is an interesting mixture of art, culture, history and natural beauty which makes it one of the most beautiful towns along the Amalfi Coast.

Scala is located at an altitude of 360 meters at the feet of the Lattari range of mountains. Scala is known to be the oldest town along the coast. The town is quite small but is known for its beautiful orchards, oak woods and chestnut groves. 

The town has a beautiful hilly landscape and is characterized by its many old staircases that lead to the orchards and the valleys. The valleys are noted for their unspoiled natural beauty and their various rare and exotic plants and trees. The Valle delle Ferriere is known for its excellent flora and fauna. The landscape has typical Mediterranean bushes and a riot of colors and smells.

The valley where Scala is located is set among rocks which are covered by bushes and groves. It is corssed by the Canneto stream which allows the growth of ferns like the Woodwardia radicans which are known to be quite rare. Scala is known for its beautiful castle, towers, churches and monuments.

The Amalfi Coast is blessed with excellent natural beauty and a rare combination of history, culture and art for which it has been included in the UNESCO's world heritage list since 1997.
