Nobility of Piero: Piero Della Francesca and the Italian Courts

Arezzo, State Museum of Medieval and Modern Art

31st March - 22nd July 2007

"With Piero the form becomes the crystallization and the core of the spatial poem which develops in the fresco with unspeakable greatness. Perspective, once understood as purely mechanical, becomes almost poetic."  E. Faure - L'Art Renaissant 1939

Piero della Francesca: undisputed cornerstone of renaissance art upon which there remains much to say and to reveal, in a fascinating and ambitious exhibition.

Battaglia di Costantino

In Arezzo, Piero della Francesca will be the protagonist of an extraordinary exhibition, Piero della Francesca and the Italian Courts - which reunites over a hundred precious works worldwide from amongst the maestro's masterpieces, brought for the occasion to his homeground, and works by artists who influenced him or who drew upon his teaching -

amongst whom Domenico Veneziano, Fra Carnevale, Pisanello, Leon Battista Alberti, Bono da Ferrara, Jacopo Bellini.

Piero della Francesca, was an artist capable of gathering stimuli and the solicitation of the culture of the era, leaving an indelible mark upon European art history, "scientist to be a better painter" capable of elaborating one of the most unprecedented pictorial forms of the age, a painter with a very special abstract capacity and a love for mankind, as seen in his mathematical reports and in his compositional purity, which in his works becomes sobriety, monumentality, universal ideal and is, at the same time, extremely human.

Madonna del parto

His capacity to make a mark upon the culture of the age, the contribution which he knew to give to the reform of art in its renaissance sense and, above all, the capacity of the maestro to act as ambassador of the new style in the principal courts of Europe - maintaining above all an absolute autonomy of living and of thought and shrinking from the role of "court artist" - these are, therefore, the central elements which will be brought to the fore in this exhibition.

The scientific project will be exhibited alongside the masterpieces painted by the great artist, together with codes, drawings, gold objects, medals, sculptures and bronzes of important contemporaries, belonging to some of the most prestigious collections of works of art. In this respect, the relationship with museum institutions bas been hallmarked by a close and positive co-operation. In Arezzo, therefore, will be exhibited works brought from some of the most important European museums (and not only European), amongst which are:

the Museé du Louvre, Paris, the Szeprezesti Museum of Budapest, the Gemaldegalerie of Berlin, the Hermitage of St. Petersburg, the Albertina of Vienna, the Victoria and Albert, London and the Galleria Nazionale of Umbria at Perugia, the Museum of Capodimonte, the Galleria degli Uffizi of Florence, il Castello Sforzesco of Milan, the Gallerie dell'Accademia of Venice. Additionally, important works from American Museums will be present (Chicago, New York).

Also to be highlighted, in close partnership with the exhibition, the Piero della Francesca Itinerary with the visit to the frescoes of the "Legend of the True Cross" in the Church of San Francesco and to the painting of St. Mary Magdalen in the Cathedral. The Itinerary continues with other works held in the civic museum of Sansepolcro, amongst which are "Polittico della Misericordia", the "Resurrection", the "San Giuliano", the "San Ludovico" and the fresco of the "Madonna del Parto" of Monterchi, housed in the same museum. An exhilarating journey which also highlights colors, landscapes and atmosphere of a territory which remain unaltered in time, marked indelibly by the artistic genius of Piero della Francesca.

Copia di Sogno

Piero della Francesca (circa 1412 - 12 October 1492) is one of the maestros on which is founded the European aesthetic sentiment. Rediscovered after a long silence towards the end of the nineteenth century, he represented the supreme canon of beauty for English writers such as Aldous Huxley and was a myth for the whole of western painting in the twentieth century. His works are to be found in the foremost Italian, European and North American museums; his masterpieces are the frescoes painted in the Church of San Francesco in Arezzo.

Mathematician and great perspective, author of treaties, his clear painting was, from the middle of the 1400's, at the origins of the painting schools of Ferrara, Romagna and Rome and inspired Venetian painting. Neither Cossa nor Melozzo da Forlì, and not even Giovanni Bellini would have been who they were without his example, which was formative for maestros such as Luca Signorelli, Perugino, Raffaelo, Antonello da Messina. Stylistic reports have for some time demonstrated a link between his work and that of the great maestro of Tours, Jean Fouquet, as of Barthélémie d'Eyck, the maestro of the king Renato d'Anjou and of Petrus Christus.

Along with Leon Battista Alberti, it was he who gave theoretical foundation to the architecture of the Renaissance, so Piero della Francesca was the painter who unified the artistic language of the Italian peninsula and he who exercised a profound influence on European art of his time.

This unifying function is explained by way of his presence in the courts - Rimini, Ferrara, Rome, Urbino - which were the most strenuous promoters of humanism. The exhibition to be held in Arezzo is dedicated therefore to the work of Piero della Francesca and its cultural implications.
