Montefalco

Small Town in Umbria

At 6 km from Bevagna, we find Montefalco, which is also defined "the Umbrian railing" because of its panoramic position. Concerning the monuments, you can see S. Francesco's church (dated back to 1300. Today it is the town art-gallery), whose apse was completely painted by Benozzo Gozzoli in 1451-1452.

He also painted S. Girolamo's chapel and S. Fortunato's church. Moreover, you can visit the beautiful gothic church of S. Agostino with old frescoes (XIV and XV centuries), S. Chiara's church, the chapel of Santa Croce with frescoes dated back to 1300. Montefalco is situated in the centre of a limited area in which they produce two famous wines: Sagrantino DOCG and the red Montefalco DOC.

The cellars are numerous, for the joy of who wants to taste and to know some of the best wines of the region.

The cuisine is very rich and characteristic: sweet cakes with aniseed, "tozzetti" and a wide gamma of dishes seasoned with Sagrantino wine (rice, rigmarole, fillet, etc.).

The manufacture of fabrics derives from an old tradition and it is still thriving thanks to the production of tablecloths, blankets, sheets, embroidered hangings.

There are also many cultural performances: the enological week, the Resurrection of Christ, the "Ciuccetta" in Easter time; the "Montefalchese August" and the "escape of the cow" in summer, followed by the feast of the grape, the exhibition-market of honey and, in October, the review of the dialectical Umbrian poetry.

Anyway, anyone who goes to Montefalco cannot forget to taste its unequalled red wine!
