NarniNarni, UmbriaTHE TERRITORY:
It was the first settlement of the Umbri, conquered later by the Romans. To this day it has kept intact the aspects of a medieval village. You can see the rocca Alborrnoziana dominating the town - Numerous monuments compose the historical center including the Dome, many Roman-Gothic churches, and Priori public square. Beneath St. Dominic's monastery, there is the underground of Narrni. The underground consists of a 12th century church, which was found only 20 years ago. Some of the oldest frescos in the city are still found within this church.
There is a passage inside from which you can enter into a large room with a roman cistern, which is probably the remains of a roman house, or "domus". There is also a large dark room, which was the Tribunal of Inquisition, where the presumed heretics were put on trial. Several documents from the municipal archives, and traces on the masonry, left by torture instruments, prove that these trials existed. In the outskirts there is Saint Cassiano Abby, the Speco of San Francesco and for those who love nature, there are the cascades of the Marmore in the national park of Umbria. With regard to the folkloristic events of Narni, The fascinating 'corsa dell' anello (race of the ring), its known in Europe as one of the most beautiful reenactments of medieval competition, in which horses quest to conquer the ring.
It takes place in the city of Rioni and it is accompanied by a historical parade of flag tossing and drummers. In this period the city is transformed completely into a medieval village complete with a tavern, in which musical and teatrali shows are carried out (this goes on from the beginning of April until mid May). Moreover Narni has a railway station from which you can reach the 'eternal city' of Rome in little under an hour. |
