In the southern part of Siena, the unreal atmosphere of a moon landscape characterize the Sienese Crete. In contrast with the green Val d'Orcia, here the dominant colors are the marvelous yellow of sunflowers and wheat fields and the grey of the clay. Across this valleys Romans build one of the most important historical street of Italy, the Cassia, later renamed Via Francigena; during Medieval Age pilgrims coming from France considered it the most important way to Rome and along centuries numerous churches, abbeys, hostels and castles were built on both sides of the street in order to give them accommodation.

Programme:

Depart at 9.00 from any hotel in Siena, Florence or private Villa in the countryside. A wonderful panoramic street through the Crete will conducts us directly to the castle of Chiusure and the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore where time seems to have stopped in XIII/XIV century. The Abbey, founded in 1320 by Bernardo di Tolomei an important Sienese nobleman, stands isolated on top of a hill and still represents one of the most important centre of culture in Italy. Here a community close to the Benedictine Rule lived and worked for centuries. After this plunge in the past we will reach an interesting centre of oil production nearby Trequanda, where we will have the chance to taste local products.
