Verbs can be used in different ways, active, passive and reflexive forms.

When the subject of the sentence is doing the action we use the active form:

Es.

Tu meriti un premio. = You deserve a prize.

In the passive voice the verb is changed so its object becomes the grammatical subject. When the "agent"of the action is specified, the passive voice is expressed by the following sentence:

Subject + essere + past participle + da + agent

Es. Questa barca è stata costruita da Carlo. =  This boat was built by Charles.

The reflexive verbs are used to express an action performed from the subject that is reflected on the same subject.

Es.

Io mi guardo allo specchio ogni mattina =  I look at myself in the mirror.

Essi si detesteranno sempre                      = They will always hate themselves.

Qui si vendono molti libri                         = Many books are sold here.

Ero sicura che ti saresti salvato                 = I was sure you would have rescued yourself.
