Opening a Bottle of WineOpening a Bottle of Wine CorrectlyOpening a Bottle of Wine Correctly It may seem like one of those things you don't have to think too much about . . . until you actually have to do it. Broken, stuck, or shredded corks can put a damper on your evening. Learn how to open a bottle of wine the right way and pass yourself off as a pro!
First of all, choose the right sort of device. The best gadget you can use is the so-called "waiter's pull." This is the handy little thing that looks similar to a Swiss-army knife when the tools are stored. On one end you have the corkscrew, on the other a curved knife. The metal lever is what enables you to smoothly pull the cork out of the mouth of the bottle with panache. (Note: Winglever corkscrews do not deliver panache. Using one is a sure indication that you're a novice. In addition, these corkscrews often do not fit over the mouths of bottles and they tend to destroy the cork, leaving you with a half-removed cork, or, what's worsecork crumbs.)
There is something about a person who can opening a bottle of wine correctly without spillage that makes an impression on guests. It implies a certain cosmopolitan knowledge about the world that other people envy and emulate. You may envy it too, but emulate it correctly, and no one will be the wiser!
